Dealing With Anxiety
How to eradicate fear of the unknown
I have never been a particularly anxious individual.
Even when I was younger, I was known for being a calm, cool, collected little guy.
I recognize some people aren’t so lucky.
Whether or not genetics play a factor is up for debate, but I do think your early upbringing plays a significant role in your anxiety “baseline.”
For the most part, I always had a pretty low baseline anxiety level.
So, you can imagine my shock when I was at the height of my testosterone deficiency.
I was a WRECK.
I was worried about EVERYTHING:
“Did I pay my phone bill?”
“Is this or that client going to be upset with me?”
“Am I going to hit my sales targets this month?”
And that was as someone with a low anxiety baseline…
The people out there with HIGH baselines must literally be losing their minds. 🤯
This is what happens when you have low testosterone.
It’s one of the most common psychological symptoms.
And not only is it horrible, but it manifests in different ways depending on where you are in your life.
In young men, for example, it’s often anxiety around women.
The other day I heard a statistic that absolutely blew my mind:
In Japan, almost half of all young men have never had a girlfriend.
HALF.
One of the guys on our team lives over there, and I asked him why.
His answer?
Because they’re a nervous wreck.
Because they’re absolutely terrified to speak to a woman and potentially get rejected.
I mean, these guys are literally the descendants of Samurai…
And they’re shaking in their boots at the thought of talking to a girl 🤦♂️
This is what happens when your society has its male hormones completely depleted (Japan has some of the lowest testosterone levels in the developed world).
And that’s just one example.
If you’re currently experiencing this state of anxiety, think of all the ways this is showing up in your life:
❌ You’re stuck in your miserable, dead end job because you’re too scared to make a move
❌ You’re putting off starting your own business because you can’t bear the thought of striking out on your own
❌ You can’t get any work done because your monkey mind is constantly going in circles over what MIGHT happen
This is no way to live…
And for millennia, men did NOT live like this.
Anxiety is just another word for fear.
And fear, in the natural state of the world, is temporary.
A threat presents itself, a lion jumps of the bushes, and there’s an immediate rush of fear and adrenaline.
But when it’s over, it’s over.
You (if you didn’t get eaten) return to baseline and go about your life.
That’s not what happens anymore.
Now, to be fair, a big part of this comes down to the conditions of the modern world.
After all, our hunter-gatherer ancestors didn’t have email, bills, credit, and the million other little ongoing crisis’s we have to worry about.
But the fact remains - even in the modern era, men used to handle life MUCH better.
I mean, think about all those Japanese dudes quivering in their little booties at the thought of talking to a woman…
Their grandfathers and great-grandfathers were literally flying their planes head on into American battleships 80 years ago.
And in case you’re wondering, no, I’m not glorifying kamikaze pilots, I’m making a point:
Chronic anxiety in men is a modern, 21st-century phenomenon.
And the common thread that brings it all together is testosterone.
So, here’s what I want you to do…
Sit down in a quiet place and take out a notebook and pencil.
Write down ALL of your fears and anxieties on a piece of paper.
Then I want you to sit there, read it, and FEEL it.
Feel what it feels like to have everything weighing down on you.
And now think about how GOOD it’s going to feel when you finally get your testosterone optimized.
Will it get rid of ALL your anxiety?
No.
It’s a health intervention, not a magic bullet.
And some level of anxiety is the price we pay for modernity.
But I can tell you right now that it will absolutely take it down by orders of magnitude.
And whatever remains will be A LOT easier to deal with.
Best,
Hunter Williams
