I’m endlessly fascinated by the topic of former athletes…

And the paths they take later in life.

Specifically, I’m curious about what’s made ME different.

When I look at how my life turned out - and how my former teammate’s lives turned out - the distinction could not be more night and day.

Let me put it to you this way…

You’d think that somebody who spent their formative years grinding their butt off would turn into an absolute specimen later in life.

You’d think that somebody who’s spent years sweating it out and training hours upon hours per week could leverage that discipline into a lifetime of pristine health.

After all, pressure makes diamonds, right?

And yet, that’s not the case.

Why not?

In a previous email, I discussed the fact that most of these guys approached training from a very dark place.

The old “I’m gonna beat my demons out in the gym” mindset.

It’s a trap that I fell prey to for years…

Until I learned to let go of that and approach training from a place of love.

Because at the end of the day, you can only motivate yourself with the stick for so long.

But you know what?

The carrot’s not much better.

While a lot of us were indeed fueling our training with rage, anger, and a fear that we were going to lose our coveted positions as elite college football players, the reality is that we had a big ol’ carrot dangling in front of us, too:

The NFL 🏈

And let me tell you, that was a POWERFUL motivator.

A big, bold, audacious goal that was large enough to light a bushfire under the ANY football-crazy 22-year-old….

Until it wasn’t.

Until the carrot had been removed.

This is why soooo many once-great athletes don’t just “fall off the wagon”.

They become dumpster fires.

When we think of these individuals, we often think of lifelong metabolic emergencies.

The poor guy whose parents fed them nothing but trash during their childhood (which is tantamount to child abuse, by the way).

The person who’s never spent a moment of their life NOT overweight or obese.

Sure, those men and women exist…

But the “stud to dud” pipeline is much more common than you think, and former athletes are a MASSIVE part of the dumpster fire population.

Now, don’t get me wrong…

Not all of them fall off the wagon right away.

Some of them manage to sustain themselves after their retirement…

Usually, by finding another carrot.

But eventually, that stops doing it for them as well.

And when that happens, they have nothing left to keep them going.

It’s unfortunate.

Now, I know that many of you think this doesn’t apply to you…

After all, many of you are not former athletes.

But I am willing to bet that MANY of you are relying on a carrot.

Many of you are relying on a FUTURE vision for your life.

A vision of what COULD be if you buckled down and put the work in.

And don’t get it twisted; that can be a powerful motivator…

But it’s not enough.

You CANNOT live in the future.

You cannot live in an imaginary state of perfection.

The future will not sustain you…

But the present will.

If you ever want to adopt this lifestyle sustainably, you must live in the NOW.

You must reach the point where you can look yourself in the mirror, imperfections and all, and say, “I’m healthy, whole, and complete.”

The point where the joy of optimization is in the work itself.

The ACT of crafting a beautiful new body and mind will sustain you, not the GOAL.

And once you get to the point where you’re living fully in the present moment, the real magic - and sustainable progress - truly happens.

Best,

Hunter Williams
