Now, let's move on to my thoughts to kickstart your week.

There’s somewhat of a debate happening in the world of optimization.

A debate as to whether or not you should track your health metrics…

Or go by “feel.”

If you know anything about how Jay Campbell and I approach this, you know that we are very much in the second camp.

Yes, we’re aware of our health metrics.

Body fat, blood work, hormone levels—all that good stuff is absolutely critical to pay attention to if you ever want to improve your health.

But for the two of us, we pay A LOT more attention to how we feel at any given time.

And it’s that feeling - that raw, intuitive sense of our body and its functioning - that we use to make our decisions.

You probably also know that, as newbies, we recommend that you track more than we do.

Quite a bit more, actually.

You see, the problem is that your average normie (aka “flaming dumpster fire of a human”) doesn’t track…well, hardly anything 🤷‍♂️

So it makes sense that you should start paying attention and meticulously logging these things if you're new.

But this state of obsessive-compulsive accounting should be temporary.

It should be seen as training wheels until you can “go by feel” like we do…

Because life is SO MUCH better when you do.

Why?

It simplifies EVERYTHING:

No more obsessing over numbers

No more food logs

No more sleepless nights worrying about this or that measurement

Obviously, the numbers don’t go away completely.

I still get blood tests a few times a year to ensure nothing’s lurking under the surface, and I still track my nutrition when I’m trying to get superhuman lean.

However, for the most part, these numbers are NOT a part of my regular life.

But there’s another reason that we don’t suggest going by feel as a newbie.

Because it’s IMPOSSIBLE.

Look, I’m just going to be blunt for a moment…

If you’ve spent the last few decades treating your body like crap, you have no idea what “normal” feels like”.

You have no frame of reference for any of this.

And when you have no frame of reference, how can you “feel” your way through anything? 🤷‍♂️

Let me give you an example…

I can tell, with freakishly good accuracy, if the weight I’ve gained or lost is fat or muscle.

Not even a lot of weight - like a few pounds.

If my weight has increased or decreased (consistently, not just transiently), I know whether it’s muscle or fat without any measurement tool.

You don't have that ability if you’re over 15% body fat.

There’s simply too much flab there to know what’s going on.

When I drop a few lbs, I can SEE it, baby! 😎

Another example is hormones.

My optimization protocol is pretty dialed in at this point.

So it doesn’t really fluctuate all that much.

But I can tell with almost 100% accuracy if something is “off” hormonally simply based on how I feel.

Again, for 99% of people, this isn’t possible.

After all, if the only thing you’ve ever felt is varying degrees of terrible for decades...

Well, it’s pretty hard to have any reference for what “good” feels like, right?

And those are just two examples.

This principle applies to almost everything when it comes to health.

And it’s one more reason you should STRIVE to get to this point.

Because I’ll tell you this: optimization is a lot more fun if you play the game in easy mode 😁

Best,

Hunter Williams
