Hormones and Heartbreak
The future ain't what it used to be
Yogi Berra might say—the future of romanitc relationships and marriage ain’t what it used to be.
Here’s some evidence to back it up:
❌ Divorce rates remain stubbornly high.
❌ Studies show couples are having sex far less frequently than they did a generation ago.
❌ A growing number of people report feeling emotionally disconnected in their relationships.
When it comes to theories explaining why intimacy and connection are fading, a lot of fingers point to cultural changes:
We’re told that technology is killing romance. Social media and dating apps? Great for swiping, not so great for deep connections.
Good point. A curated Instagram feed or a swipe-left culture isn’t exactly conducive to fostering intimacy.
We’re told that economic stress is tearing couples apart.
Also a fair point. It’s hard to feel romantic when financial stress is crushing both partners.
We’re told that modern life is just too busy.
Valid. Between work, kids, and the 24/7 hustle, where’s the time—or energy—for meaningful connection?
These are all contributing factors, no doubt. But they’re not the root of the problem.
But, let’s zoom out for a second.
These challenges—technology, economics, stress——have existed for decades. Yet, the decline in intimacy has been steadily increasing for even longer.
So, what’s the real cause?
Hormones.
Specifically, low testosterone levels in both men and women.
We all know that men’s testosterone levels have been in freefall for years. But what often gets overlooked is that women’s testosterone levels are plummeting, too—and it’s having devastating effects on relationships.
Here’s what happens when testosterone levels drop:
❌ For men, lower testosterone often means decreased libido, less confidence, and less energy—key traits that fuel passion in a relationship.
❌ For women, declining testosterone can lead to reduced desire, lower energy, and less emotional engagement.
And it doesn’t stop there.
Testosterone plays a critical role in bonding, emotional resilience, and even how attracted we are to our partners.
When both partners are struggling with hormone imbalances, it’s a recipe for disconnection:
Fewer romantic moments.
Less emotional closeness.
A growing divide that’s tough to bridge.
And what’s making this worse?
Prescription drugs.
Many of the most commonly prescribed medications—like hormonal birth control, SSRIs, and anti-anxiety drugs—wreak havoc on testosterone levels and libido:
❌ Hormonal birth control drastically lowers free testosterone in women, often leading to a reduced capacity for connection and desire.
❌ SSRIs and anti-anxiety medications suppress the body’s natural response to intimacy, both physically and emotionally.
Combine low testosterone with these drugs, and you’ve got a cocktail for relationship disaster.
Testosterone is the fuel that keeps the fire burning in romantic relationships and marriages.
But here’s the good news:
There are ways to fight back.
You can optimize your hormones, get off the medications that may be sabotaging your relationships, and reignite the spark in your marriage or partnership.
