The Obesity J-Curve
The sad state of America
When I think back to when I was a young kid, I honestly can’t remember hearing many stories about my classmate’s or friend’s parents dying.
Sure, there was the rare tragic accident or cancer diagnosis…
But for the most part, relatively young adults in their 30s and 40s weren’t just unexpectedly dropping dead.
Nowadays?
It’s becoming frighteningly common…
And if this trend continues, it might just become the norm.
Here’s a little story to illustrate this:
Right before Thanksgiving, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law informed me of a horror story about a family down the street.
They live in what most would consider a pretty nice neighborhood, and their neighbor is—or WAS—a big dude.
Like, 400 pounds big.
And the morning before Thanksgiving, he collapsed.
His wife heard it, ran upstairs screaming…and within a few short minutes, he was dead.
But do you want to know what’s REALLY sad about this?
This man was 45 years old.
Not 75 — 45.
And he left a wife and a 5-year-old daughter behind.
When I heard this, I was blown away…
But I realize I shouldn’t be.
These kinds of deaths happen every day - this is just the first one that happened to someone with one degree of separation from me.
And they’re only going to get more and more common.
Remember, this guy died for one reason and one reason only:
Because he was obese.
And 40 percent of Americans are in his shoes.
So, why am I bringing this up to YOU?
After all, most of you reading this are not obese.
You’re either in good shape, on the way to being in good shape, or are, at worst, a little bit chubby.
I’m bringing it up as a warning.
Obesity is now the default path.
Everything in mainstream American culture is set up for you to be obese:
❌ The food you eat
❌ The lifestyle you live (when was the last time you walked anywhere?)
❌ The chemicals in the environment
❌ The messages in the media
All of this conspires to set you on the same path this poor man fell down.
The solution?
You must actively resist.
It’s not enough to just say, “Yeah, I’ll eat a little bit less and go to the gym a few times a week.”
There’s no middle ground anymore.
There are two paths ahead of you - optimized vs. unoptimized.
The optimized path leads you toward a life of happiness, health, and vitality.
The unoptimized path leads you to an early grave.
Don’t believe me?
The obesity rate in 1975 was somewhere around 15%.
By the year 2000, it was 30%.
Today, at the end of 2024, it’s 40%.
Where do you think it will be in the next 25 years?
Do you think you’ll survive…
Or will you become just another statistic?
Best,
Hunter Williams
