Therapy vs. Testosterone
The truth about hormones and mental health
Have you noticed that everyone and their dog is going to therapy these days?
Funny, isn’t it?
When I was growing up, almost NOBODY went to therapy.
And something that (especially if you were a dude) would get you made fun of.
Now?
There are services available that allow you to connect with a therapist online from the comfort of your home.
Some even reach out to me wanting to advertise to my email list!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining about this sudden shift.
The fact that more people (and again, ESPECIALLY more men) are talking about mental health is an overwhelmingly positive development.
And just like meditation, contemplation, and grounding, I can see this being an overwhelmingly beneficial practice for many guys to talk to someone and get to the root of their emotional issues…
But it’s not enough.
Not only is it not enough, but it neglects a very fundamental piece of the puzzle:
Your body!
I cover this topic extensively in my upcoming book Testosterone: The God Molecule—so much so that I devote an entire chapter to it.
Look, I’m not gonna lie here - as much as I bag on it, Western Medicine has accomplished a lot.
Penicillin, surgery, emergency medicine…
Put it this way: if I broke my leg tomorrow, I’d much rather be in America than a village in Nepal.
But Western medicine has a fatal flaw:
The fact that it compartmentalizes the body.
It treats your body like it’s a simple factory with different components.
Have you ever noticed that when you go to a general practitioner, they kind of just look at you, shrug their shoulders, and send you off to a specialist?
In a properly functioning system, that wouldn’t happen.
In a properly functioning system, ALL doctors would be trained to understand the body as a unified whole.
The body is NOT a simple factory of inputs and outputs - it’s a beautiful symphony.
Each part of the symphony impacts every other part…
And yes, that includes your body and your mind.
So, if you’re suffering from:
❌ Depression
❌ Anxiety
❌ Resentfulness
❌ Moodiness
❌ Regretfulness
There is, most likely, a physical component to it.
And for the vast majority of men today, that component is hormonal in nature.
Yes, you guessed - most guys walking around with these symptoms of mental illness have RAGING testosterone deficiencies.
In fact, these are some of the FIRST symptoms that we typically see.
Erectile dysfunction?
That’s WAY down the list.
But all of these psychological symptoms typically appear right away.
Again, I’m NOT saying you shouldn’t get therapy.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t mediate or engage in any of these other practices.
But the fact is that nothing will change until you fundamentally address your hormone deficiency.
Until you address the physical component of your mental distress, nothing will heal.
And a GOOD therapist will straight up tell you this!
A good therapist will, in your first sessions, ask you:
✅ How you’re sleeping
✅ How you’re eating
✅ If you’re exercising
✅ If you use drugs or alcohol
All great questions…
But again, they don’t go deep enough.
I’d go as far as to say that if every therapy office in the country were next to a testosterone-prescribing clinic, the male health epidemic would soon be a thing of the past.
Wouldn’t that be a glorious world? 🙂
Best,
Hunter Williams
