How To Use Technology (Without It Using You)
Don’t become a statistic
If you ever, for some reason, want to be shocked, horrified, and a little disgusted, just take a quick look at what technology is doing to humanity.
Seriously, I’ve been delving into this topic recently, and the stories I’ve uncovered have been shocking indeed.
Want an example?
The AI chatbot company Replica recently had to issue an update on their AI chatbots.
The reason?
Hoards of young dudes were trying to get romantic with their little AI companion 🤦
And after the update was issued preventing them from doing that, a lot of these guys didn’t just lose their minds - they became suicidally depressed that their “beloved” was being taken from them 😳
Want another example?
Apparently, teachers have now started noticing there’s a MASSIVE bifurcation in the children they teach.
There are now two broad groups of children - kids who grew up with iPads, and kids who didn’t.
The kids who didn’t are the ones who can read, write, do basic math - you know, all that stuff a normal 7-year-old should be able to do.
The kids who did grow up with iPads?
Not only are they illiterate, but their brains are so underdeveloped that they don’t even understand the concept of a physical classroom…
To the point where many of them will just get up in the middle of class and leave.
What is the term they have for these kids?
Runners 😢
Now, I know that most of you haven’t fallen that far (at least I HOPE not).
But at the end of the day, ALL of us are susceptible to this.
After all, we all live in a world in which it’s impossible to disengage from technology completely.
And just because we haven’t fallen in love with a chatbot yet doesn’t mean this technology isn’t having a DRAMATIC effect on our lives and how our brains function (or don’t).
So, the question is, what do we do about it?
Look, I’m not gonna rule out the possibility of one day just unplugging and moving off the grid.
But for the time being, I’m online.
My business is online, my coaching services are online, and my ability to connect with you and spread my message of optimal health is online.
And my guess is YOU are in a similar situation.
Regardless of your lifestyle and what you’ve chosen to do to make a living, I’m willing to bet cutting the chord isn’t an immediate option for you either.
The good news is that there are things you can do to minimize the damage.
All of these are strategies that I employ to keep me and my brain healthy while allowing me to use technology to enhance my life without becoming a slave to it.
Engage With Nature Daily
Before you give me some lame excuse, let me stop you…
I don’t care who you are, what you do, or how busy you think you are:
EVERYBODY can disconnect from their phone and connect with nature.
And EVERYBODY can do it daily:
🦶 Grounding
🚶 Going for walks
🌞 Sunbathing
🏞️ Chilling in the park
Go out into your backyard and wrap your arms around a tree if you have to.
Even just 30 minutes per day will make a massive difference and will help mitigate a lot of the damage that technology is inflicting on you.
Disconnect For Extended Periods Of Time
While short, daily intervals in the great outdoors are essential, I would also strongly recommend LONGER periods as well.
While it might not be possible to disconnect completely, you can certainly do it for a few days…
And it feels AMAZING 🤩
Whether it’s going on a 10-day silent meditation or something as simple as camping, there’s nothing like ditching your phone for a few days and fully immersing yourself in the natural world.
Set Firm Boundaries
Take a firm stand and decide what technology you will - and will NOT - allow into your life.
I’m fully on board with almost anything that makes creating content and interacting with all of you possible.
I’m also fully onboard with technology like the Fully Optimized Health Community which allows like-minded humans to find each other and connect.
What I will NOT do, however, is use social media for anything but educational content.
❌ I will NOT be playing video games.
❌ I will NOT be sucked into doom-scrolling
❌ I will NOT be watching porn (should go without saying, but in case you needed a reminder)
I also have hard, firm rules on how I use my phone and computer:
❌ No checking my phone when I wake up in the morning
❌ No technology of ANY kind within two hours of going to bed
❌ No sleeping with my phone in my bedroom (EMF pollution is real, and it will DESTROY your sleep)
And I suggest you do the same.
Best,
Hunter Williams
