What Is VIP?

Deep Dive On This Very Important Peptide

Well…it’s that time of the year again. Flu season!

Now most of you know I don’t fear monger. But it’s still important to take proactive care of our immune systems.

So today, I bring you a full deep dive on VIP.

Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide. Let’s dig in.

What is VIP? VIP is a 28-amino-acid peptide, crucial for various physiological functions. Its structure allows it to efficiently interact with specific receptors, VPAC1 and VPAC2, in our body, influencing processes from smooth muscle relaxation to immune system modulation.

Benefits of VIP:

  • Treatment of VIPomas: In patients with VIPomas, a type of tumor that overproduces VIP, treatment strategies might involve regulating VIP levels.

  • Gastrointestinal Disorders: Given its role in relaxing smooth muscle and stimulating secretion in the gastrointestinal tract, VIP could potentially be used to treat certain gastrointestinal disorders.

  • Neurological and Cognitive Benefits: As VIP functions as a neurotransmitter, it might have potential in treating neurodegenerative diseases or cognitive impairments, although this is still under research.

  • Immunomodulatory Effects: VIP has been shown to have various effects on the immune system. It could be beneficial in treating inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, though this is still being explored.

Side Effects to Consider: While VIP is generally safe, it may cause:

  • Low blood pressure

  • Rashes

  • Dizziness

  • Palpitations and irritability

  • Headaches or migraines (particularly with intranasal use)

  • Most of these side effects, while rare, come because of it’s role as a powerful vasodilator.

Dosage and Administration:

  • 50 mcg sprayed intra nasally within each nostril up to 4 times per day for a total of 30-90 days

  • 100mcg subcutaneous (will cause flushing)

  • For nasal spray:

    • Withdraw solution out of nasal bottle

    • Inject into vial of VIP

    • Once mixed, remove back out of vial and put into nasal spray bottle

Final Thoughts: VIP presents a natural alternative to conventional treatments for various conditions. Its impact on the immune system and potential in addressing pulmonary disorders and certain cancer types make it a subject of great interest.
